How to Know if a Brand is Sustainable in 2022

Shopping sustainably is a big fashion trend of late. With the seismic culture shift towards society being more mindful of our planet, brands have been following suit. This is only to be expected, as it is not only up to us, the members of society, to protect future generations - but to businesses, governments, fashion brands, and everybody else.

One business that is leading in this cultural movement is Zouri, the Portuguese eco-vegan footwear brand that is saving ocean life one beach clean-up at a time. Zouri produces sustainable shoes using plastic trash retrieved from the Portuguese coast, combined with ecologic and sustainable materials. Their shoes are produced in a fair and ethical manner, being 100% made in Portugal. Movrs are happy to support the plastic-free movement encouraged by Zouri, by stocking their collections. We hope that the future of fashion will involve this movement being adopted by many more brands in the industry.

When researching whether a brand you are shopping is sustainable are not, try using the following simple checklist:

1. Choose what type of sustainability you care for.

The word ‘sustainable’ can refer to many things. For example, being sustainable can refer to avoiding use of animal products, treating workers fairly, or directly impacting the environment. While brands may label themselves as sustainable, that does not necessarily mean they adhere to all three of these pillars. You should choose which of these matters most to you, and assess accordingly.

2. Analyse what the brand says about themselves.

While it is easy to spot some sustainable brands by merely looking at their logo, others do not parade it so obviously. So, you may want to take a look at their website to figure that out. When you do so, ask the following questions:

  • Do they make mention of sustainability?
  • Are they transparent?
  • What fabrics are used in their items?
  • Are their materials ethically sourced?

Be very critical and remember that it is easy to manipulate information to appear better than it is. Not all that glitters is gold, and not all that appears green is good.

3. Check their CSR policies.

Many large fashion labels practice some sort of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). These reports can often be found on their website. While companies often exaggerate their good points on these reports, in order to keep shareholders happy, using a critical eye will allow you to differentiate those who are ecologically responsible and those who are not.

For example, if a company recycles all the cardboard boxes in their office, this is not so impressive. However, if they state sustainable practices that they are doing which are outside the norm and require active effort, you can often trust that they are a company worth investing your shopping basket in.

4. Question their manufacturing location.

Here is a simple rule: The further the distance, the more questions to ask. Fast fashion and luxury brands tend to have one thing in common - the poor working conditions they subject their workers to. Oftentime, when you see that a brand has moved their production to China or certain other Asian countries, it should raise alarm bells.

  • Why have they chosen to relocate their factory?
  • What are they trying to achieve from this?
  • What fees are they avoiding having to pay workers in their own country?

These are important questions to ask and will often help you discern whether a brand is being genuine or is just sticking a few recycling stickers on their IG stories. We can avoid being tricked by greenwashers by simply asking the right questions.

5. Be picky with packaging.

Sometimes, the easiest way to see if a brand is faking it or not is by checking what kind of packaging they use. It does not require much work to tell an audience that you support sustainability practices, but when push comes to shove, only the real deals will incorporate these into their business model.

Do they use plastic? Red flag.

Do they add unnecessary materials to the packaging? Red flag.

Have they decided to switch to recyclable and biodegradable packaging options? Green flag!

Be picky with the packaging you buy into - it can often tell you more than simply the return address.

We hope these tips will help you to better discern whether a fashion company is sustainable or not. Feel free to browse the Movrs website to see the sustainable brands we stock under our ‘Sustainable’ section. You may find your next favourite eco-friendly brand.
